Junior scientist (tenure track) in ecophysiology, diversity and production of marine phototrophs
The Department of Estuarine and Delta Systems research (EDS) of the Royal Netherlands Institute for Sea Research (NIOZ) is recruiting a tenure track scientist who will strengthen our research on ecophysiology, diversity and production of marine phototrophs.

THE INSTITUTE
NIOZ is the national oceanographic institute and principally performs academically excellent multidisciplinary fundamental and frontier applied marine research addressing important scientific and societal questions pertinent to the functioning of oceans and seas. Second, NIOZ serves as national marine research facilitator (NMF) for The Netherlands scientific community. Third, NIOZ stimulates and supports multidisciplinary fundamental and frontier applied marine research, education and marine policy development in the national and international context.
THE DEPARTMENT
The department of Estuarine and Delta Systems research (EDS, NIOZ-Yerseke) studies how the interplay between biota, hydrodynamics, sediment dynamics and biochemistry shapes the estuarine, deltaic and coastal environments in the context of natural and human-induced environmental changes. Central to our department is a multidisciplinary holistic approach that combines state-of-the-art biophysical, biochemical, ecological, physiological measurements, remote sensing, and manipulative experiments with mathematical and numerical modelling to create in-depth understanding of the processes that control estuarine and delta systems. An important additional focus of the department is how our research can create value for society, for example following the “Building with Nature” paradigm or investigating the options for a sustainable marine food production system.
THE VACANCY
We have a job opening for a tenure track position. The field of research is broadly defined as ecophysiology, diversity and production of marine phototrophs in a changing world, with seagoing research as an important component of the proposed research. Applicants are encouraged to outline their research focus (1 – 2 pages) for the next 1-5 years. We offer flexibility for the selected candidate to shape her/his own research line within the multidisciplinary research approach of the EDS department in close collaboration with the three other scientific departments of NIOZ.
THE CANDIDATE
We are looking for an excellent, highly motivated scientist with a PhD degree in ecology, biology, physiology of marine photoautotrophs, or equivalent. You should have a keen interest in cutting-edge fundamental, process-oriented research, with an eye for the potential of translating this knowledge towards application. You will (co-)develop a rigorous research program in line with the current EDS research program, where collaboration with EDS colleagues and potentially applied partners from society, is required. You will be working in an interdisciplinary context, together with other NIOZ researchers/departments aiming to build a world-class research program via the competitive acquisition of external fundsfrom national and European funding agencies to support your research program. You should have proven excellence and scientific qualities, in line with the status of your career. You are keen to interact with PhD’s, undergraduate students and technicians. CONDITIONS
Employment of this position at Royal NIOZ is by NWOI(The Netherlands Organization of Scientific Research). We offer a tenure track position for 5 years. At the end of a successful tenure track term, a permanent scientific staff position will be offered up to the level of senior scientist. Criteria for evaluation comprise a track record of publications, proven skills in acquiring funding and the creation of an international network.
The salary is compliant to the CAO-OI (Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Research Institutes), a pension scheme, a holiday allowance of 8% of the gross annual salary, a year-end bonus of 8,3% of the gross annual salary, flexible work arrangements and 42 days of holiday leave (fulltime position).
